Falling behind
I’ve got stories to tell, and no time to write. Here’s my partial list. One of these days, I’ll get to write about them.

Spring Show
Today, I went to an Elementary school to watch a Spring Show. Supposedly, my little sister was going to be performing at the show, so I went over to watch it. I had been anxious about it the whole week because I wasn’t sure what to do when I got there - i.e., am I supposed to sit with her family, am I supposed to stay and chat afterwards, etc.
So, I decided to just be fashionably late so that I could just stand in the back and not have to worry about it. (It was an idea I stole from Ian, thanks.) I got there about 10 minutes late, which was okay, because other people came in later than I did. I searched and searched and I couldn’t find my little sister! It’s pretty easy to check because the kids stay on the stage throughout the whole show whether or not they were performing. I looked around to see if her family was there and they weren’t! Hmm. Thanks for the heads up.
But anyway, it was an interesting culture shock for me, I guess. I should’ve expected nothing but that, but I was still caught by surprise. I was the only one who wasn’t a caucasian, and I was probably the only one who didn’t have a kid or grandkid or niece or cousin on the stage. It was a little overwhelming because I kept think about what the people around me must be thinking about me.
“These people must be wondering what the hell I’m doing here.”
“These people must be wondering who I’m seeing.”
“I wonder if they’re thinking I’m an exchange student.”
So, the show was just a bunch of songs/performances one after the other. It was really quite entertaining. I think there’s about 100, plus or minus 10 people in the whole school from grades 1-6! And I must say, we always did a much better job in any of the performances I can remember when I was in elementary. There was at least some more discipline and order and structure. But, I can’t blame them either. When you have everyone from grades 1-6 is in the same performance singing the same songs, etc, you’re bound to get chaos and nothing but.
There was only one teacher directing, mc-ing, conducting, and narrating the show. The band they had going was the best. They were so out of tune but so enthusiastic, it was great. My favorite part was when they do the tuning part before they start playing. They all played the A note, and everyone was so dreadfully off. But, heedless of it, they all went a-playing. It was hilarious! I’m glad I went. But I’m also glad I was able to leave early.

Proof
Here’s a shout out to kf. who questions my claims about having the worst study habits in our high school class. ![]()
We were all given this weird test regarding perception and attitude about school and classes and junk like that. I still remember one of the questions being about how you feel when the teacher walks in. I checked the choice saying “I’d often wish I were somewhere else”. We were told to be honest. And man, when that lesbo typing teacher (I’ve fortunately forgotten her name, but not her intrams dance - “Friends they come and friends they go…” Ahh, it burns in my memory!!!) would walk in, I ALWAYS wished I were somewhere else, even if it were in another class or the library, or out in the field catching frogs. Dude, I wanted to be anywhere but typing class. And home ec classes with Mrs. G-. Boy, oh, boy, don’t get me started on that.
Some other questions included things about day dreaming during classes and whether you think homework was studying, etc. It was a pretty long test and when the results came in, I was at the very bottom. I had to talk to the guidance counsellor, make a revised daily after-school schedule, etc. Of course, despite all that, I still end up with oh, pretty darn bad study habits. Even now, I can’t study worth jack.
So, you, dear reader, are probably asking, “So, D, how did you ever manage to get through college AND graduate school (with good grades to boot) despite all that?”
Well, to that, I would have to say, “Talent, baby, talent. Oh, and intelligence, I suppose. Yes, intelligence too.”

Dirty Jobs
I am hooked on this show. Tonight Mike Rowe was working at a turkey farm. Disgusting. I never think about dealing with the dead animals when I think about a farm. Apparently it’s a daily thing. Like 10 a day per 14,000. They make fertilizers out of the dead birds and use it in a potato farm. Eww.
I can’t wait to see the last job he’s going to do for this show. Waste water treatment plant. That’s all I’m gonna say. Bleh.
So yeah, I love that show.
