Art Show pictures

Posted in General at 9:08 pm by D

I don’t have an html editor so the page looks really bad. I was thinking of doing thumbnails and links, but I hate doing that. I’d rather have it all load and scroll instead of click and load for every picture link.

Enough excuses. Here it is.

Shaolin Soccer

…rocks! It was so stupid, it was hilarious! Laugh out loud funny. Even my stuffed pony had a good laugh. I can’t wait to see Kung Fu Hustle.

Frisbee today. KB joined us. First time we had another girl playing. It was fun.

Walking over, I learned that KB’s boyfriend’s sister died last week. She was 18. Her spleen burst for unknown reasons. She was brought into the hospital around noon and died in the afternoon.

I remember Ethel. Has it been four years already?

Shame on me for feeling sorry for myself yesterday.

It’s my turn

Posted in General at 11:10 pm by D

…to be down in the dumps. No reason, but I’ve been feeling pretty crappy since Friday. That day, I felt better after I read Daisy’s blog and emailing back and forth about Weezer. Saturday was a big high with the art show and dinner party. Sunday was still fun, but I was tired and I started feeling down again after I got back from Boston.

Maybe I’m just tired. But the future seems pointless. Everyone else seems to be headed somewhere. I’m already where I am and where I will be in the next few years.

I was way too happy the past few weeks. That should’ve warned me. Maybe I should let them set me up. But Why Bother? Watching When Harry Met Sally last night had the same effect watching You’ve Got Mail. Great movies, but ugh, they’re both impossibly romantic. Ick.

It’s time I got back to the Good Life.

Art Show and Dinner Party

Posted in Food, General at 11:56 am by D

I had my first art show last Saturday. I’ll put up pictures as soon as my sister sends them to me. The show was from 12-5 and I was there around noon to help set up the food and to get the first look. It was great! Everything was displayed well, the lighting and the mood was excellent. It was pouring rain outside but warm and cozy in Jeanne’s home.

Our first guests were MK (my previous boss) and his family. It was a bit awkward for me because I didn’t know what to say about the show and about my work, but they were a good audience. Jeanne took over after a few minutes to explain the whys and the hows. After they left, a few more people came by and by 1:30, I had to leave to pick up my sister at the bus station.

We went back to the show around 4:00. I saw Francie with some of the ladies from the B’s-group from work. Jeanne, our teacher, told me that MM came by with his little girl, Ella, while I was away. I was disappointed I missed them, but I was having MM and his wife over for dinner, so it was okay. My sister and her friend Mia enjoyed the ‘country’ and my teacher’s home a lot more than they did the art show, I think. :) We left after having some cheese.

That night, I had 5 people for dinner. My sister, Mia, Manny, Mike, and Sarah. Here’s the menu (ala Daisy).

Appetizers:
1. Fried pork and leek dumplings
2. Pastry pocket with sauteed mushrooms, parsley and Gorgonzola cheese

Main Entrees:
1. Chicken Adobo with hard boiled eggs
2. Slow cooked beef stew with red wine
3. Potato Gratin Dauphinois (from Jeffrey Steingarten, and taste tested from Lyds)
4. Roasted veggies
5. Rice

Dessert:
1. Lemon souffle from Sarah
2. Rick’s homemade ice cream from Manny

You’d think having 4 filipinos and 2 Keene-ians would be awkward, but we had a really good time. We didn’t even have time to play Cranium. We just kept on talking until Mike and Sarah had to leave at 10:30. People said that the food was excellent, which was a relief, after cooking so many hours that day and the night before.

It was my first time to have people over, aside from family, so that was kind of cool. All of us ended up eating on the coffee table, with 4 people sitting on the floor. When later offered chairs though, M and S refused, saying they were comfortable.

So all’s good.

And I slept in my bed last night. I had a good night’s sleep comparable to the sofa’s. I think I might just start doing that regularly.

I found a few unfinished posts. I’ll put them up even if they don’t make any sense:

1. PAINTING
So my painting lessons started again last Tuesday. Man, was that awesome. I started out sooo frustrated and ready to give up on my painting. By the end of class, I got so hyped and excited because my work just transformed into something so vibrant after just adding a background. It’s messy and crayola-ish, but I love it. It’s not done and I don’t know if I’ll ever finish it, but at least I can tell myself that I can actually make a good piece IF ONLY I finish it. Of course, my teacher’s was soooo amazing, and putting our work side by side would make anyone feel really bad, but that’s why she’s teaching. Besides, she’s always gushing with compliments to compensate for her students’ inabilities. I’ll try to put up a photo of it.

[Update: I actually did finish this. I worked on it again after 3 weeks. It'll be in the art show tomorrow. I'll make sure to take a photo of my framed pieces and put them up.]

2. NO CLUE
Often, more lately than ever, I get stuck in my little world. I’ve gotten so comfortable where I am and with the things I do that I forget there’s a big world out there…

[I have no clue what I was thinking of here, or what happened. Maybe this was the time the pope was getting sick? I'm not sure.]

3. New York Baby Shower
I had a pretty good time in NYC this past weekend, except for when my sister and I were moving her stuff from her old apartment to the new one. 4 freaking floor walk up.
We went to Colet’s and Jay’s baby shower and had a ton of laughs with the Santankids. Some of the highlights are the following:
Tin - (as two girls came in awkwardly carrying a huge gift-wrapped box, Tin whispered to Colet) Who are they?
Colet - (whispering back to Tin) Maybe they went to the wrong party…
One of the two girls - (Colet and Tin were so obvious) I’m A—-, Jay’s friend.
Later…
Jay - (to Noreen) Your pimple is huge.

[Update: Baby Samantha was born 1 month (?) premature. She was only 3 lbs when she was born. I'll put up pictures of her once I have them. ]

It’s hot in here

Posted in Work at 4:53 pm by D

A quote from a study by Hedge on the relationship between temperature and productivity:

“At 77 degrees Fahrenheit, the workers were keyboarding 100 percent of the time with a 10 percent error rate, but at 68 degrees, their keying rate went down to 54 percent of the time with a 25 percent error rate,”

The temperature in Keene is 77F. It is 83F in my cubicle.

Sparse

Posted in General at 11:31 pm by D

There’s barely been any updates here in the past month. I’ve wanted to write a few times, but haven’t had the time. In any case, here are the updates:

1. Congratulations to Kuya Jay and Colet for Baby Samantha Nicole!
2. I saw Muse for the THIRD time last weekend. I’ll see them again and again and again anytime.
3. Ultimate frisbee at work is solid. I had my first tackle today and scored a few, missed a few too, but I’m not counting those.
4. Life of Pi is a really good book.
5. I love reading Jeffrey Steingarten… Avoid eating raw veggies, they might be inhibiting your body from ingesting vitamins from food you eat (esp. raw spinach, Casey).
6. Our art show is coming up this weekend! Pictures of work will be up after Saturday.

I left out a LOT of good and juicy details, but I only just need that list to remember them.

Uncle Rico

Posted in General at 11:29 pm by D

Casey, TB, Lydia, Daisy… I just saw Uncle Rico in Seinfeld!!! It took me 5 seconds to place him because he had this funny wig on - the one George had which Elaine threw out the window! It was awesome!

First game

Posted in General at 11:09 pm by D

First game tomorrow!!! I’m pretty psyched and pretty scared too. People are starting to ask why I’ve been so eager to set this up - scheduling, coordinating, following-up, getting funding, securing a field, etc. A while ago when I talked to TB after I got 12 people to sign up, he told me, “That’s great, D! …But you do realize you suck at ultimate.” Ugh. I was too excited then and said, “Who cares? It’s fun!”

It is fun, but I’m really quite nervous. I wasn’t really that good in ultimate. But hey, I could run and guard and I eventually learned how to catch and throw. And I still remember getting at least 3 goals in one frisbee session before.

Whatever. I’m excited. I have 175g frisbee that I tried throwing on my sofa tonight. They were a lot easier to throw than my 130g one. I still wish I could’ve practiced a little bit when I was in NY over the weekend, but we never had time. That didn’t stop me from bringing the stupid frisbee everywhere we went. At the very least, we gave the impression that that’s what we were gonna do. A few people nodded and said, “It’s the perfect day to play frisbee.” It sure was. Tomorrow should be too.
