Dining and Sleeping

Posted in General at 2:35 pm by D

Anybody wondering how my dining table is? Well, whether or not you are, here’s the update: It’s doing pretty well. I use it for breakfast mainly, but I usually still eat at my coffee table with me squatting on the floor. When I move the entertainment center, then the tv will be more accessible to the dining table, which will make the dining table more accessible to me.

I tried sleeping in my bedroom the other day. I stayed in bed for about 30 minutes until I decided that I miss the tv. So I moved back to the couch.

Ah, another lunch break gone. Oh well. I should remember to bring literature tomorrow. By literature, I mean Time magazine. Blogs have been my literature for a few days now. Not bad, but not as good as email.

Black Friday

Posted in Books and Movies, General at 12:39 am by D

A belated happy thanksgiving to everyone!

Black Friday is the shopping day after Thanksgiving. It’s called black friday to mark the change from unprofitability to protiftability. Apparently, when records were done by hand, red was used to mark losses, and black for profits.

Here’s the thing. The Pheasant Lane mall is the closest mall to my place. That’s an hour and half away! So to get to the doorbuster deals today, I woke up at 5 am, kept bugging my sister until she got out of bed at 5:15, and we were out of the house by 6:00. We got there by 7:30 and some people were already leaving!

Anyway, here are the highlights:
1. Cashmere feels like heaven. Girls, treat yourself and be convinced that it’s an investment.
2. My sister split the cost of the dining table. Yay. I can actually eat from a chair now! No more stooping or squating.
3. Doorbuster deals aren’t what they’re made up to be. There are only a few items marked cheaper for early birds and if you have the extra 15% off coupons, chances are, you’ll be saving enough. Of course, you have the coupons and you come in early, then you’re set. We unfortunately didn’t have coupons. I’m still upset. I could’ve saved enough for another sweater. Not cashmere, but still.

Saw The Incredibles tonight. Animation was amazing, story’s okay, action sequences were great BUT it was a bit too long. The whole Mr. Incredible’s midlife crisis bit was pretty stretched out. Once the action started though, it got better. I’d still say it’s worth watching in the big screen. If you don’t want to spend that much money, come up here, matinee shows are only $5.50.

Audio books

Posted in Books and Movies at 1:33 pm by D

I went to Barnes and Nobles to look for an audiobook last Sunday for my drive back up to Boston. Yeah, yeah, it’s only 2 hours, but it could have been 2 hours spent reading. Besides, good songs can be the culprits which bring about crying when you’re sad. I didn’t want to listen to neither good songs nor bad songs. So audio books it is.

Too bad I didn’t have an mp3 player. I could’ve played Red Mars and the trilogy which I’ve put off listening to for quite a while now. But all I have is a lousy CD player. Well, it’s actually not that lousy but whatever. It doesn’t play mp3s.

So I went hunting for a good book. Well, naturally, they all came out quite expensive. One of the books I wanted to read from Terry Pratchett came up to $40. The Hobbit was I think about $45 or more. Not only were the books relatively expensive, most of them were abridged versions too! Who wants to read abridged versions? Not me, baby. I want the full version.

Here are the books I wanted to buy:
1. Terry Pratchett - Going Postal — This seemed funny
2. Edward Rutherford - The Princes of Ireland (Dublin Saga) — I like historical fiction and irish settings
3. David Sedaris - Anything from him is funny
4. Something about mixed marriages and a Chinese mother which seemed interesting too.

Anyway, they were all priced too high for me. I was looking somewhere in the $15-20 range. I mean, I had just spent a ton of money for my snowboard the day before and I had to spend another ton of money for the boots and bindings so that I can actually use my snowboard. So alas, I had to settle for the ones on sale.

You see, I consider myself a reader. As a reader trying to bump up her status to a serious reader, I don’t like to read shallow romance stories (I’ve had my fill of them) or any of those books with colorful covers obviously geared towards a female audience with titles like Confessions of a Shopaholic, or Good in Bed, or Good Girls Gone Bad. So, I was slightly ashamed to come up to the counter with the audiobook of “The Devil Wears Prada” in my hand. To make matters worse, it was abridged. Who would abridge a book entitled “The Devil Wears Prada”? I was almost tempted to buy a serious book to compensate. But, oh well, I’m poor. Beggars can’t be choosers.

But despite all my preconceived notions about those kinds of books, I actually found myself enjoying myself. It’s was very light and quite entertaining. It was almost like listening to a sitcom. Rachael Leigh Cook was pretty good at sounding pathetic too, although the main character was 5′10″ and I couldn’t keep myself from thinking that Rachel Leigh Cook is pretty short. But all in all, I’m glad I got it. At least it did it’s job of keeping my mind pre-occupied during the drive up. I have 2 CDs to go, so I can’t really review it yet. Maybe I will when I finish it.

Hanging Out

Posted in General at 11:59 pm by D

So I spent my weekend in Boston hanging out with rydw i. I had a blast. Woo!

I actually even accomplished quite a bit! First we had lunch at a tiny but good Thai restaurant somewhere in Watertown. Then we headed off to the snow and ski expo. First it felt almost not worth it because we could only see resort exhibitors. Neither of us had any money or any plans to buy season tickets or any tickets in advance for that matter. But after we saw the skateboarders, things started picking up. There was one tiny boy who was so amazing jumping and gliding and doing fancy stuff skateboarders do. When he walked out, he only came up to maybe half my chest! Go tiny boy!

Both rydw i and I bought waterproof gloves and thermals. I have yet to try my thermals, but he said they’re pretty warm. I’ll wear it soon.

The best part is… I bought a snowboard! Woo, it’s a K2 intermediate ladies board. Does that give away the fact that I know nothing about snowboards? But I trust that sales dude. And it’s an older model so I’m guessing I got it at a good price. I really like the graphic on it too. It goes well with my living room.

Ha, I said I like the graphic. For those non-snowboarders out there, it means the picture on my snowboard. I learned that over the weekend. I’m so smart.

We also went to the Annual Pre-turkey Day party at Pat’s and Greg’s. That was fun. I tried a lot of new things - fried turkey (yum!), teriyaki bacon (this was even yummier than the fried turkey), jello shots (everyone was raving about them, I didn’t really like them), and finally, I didn’t try it, but I did see how beer pong was played. Too bad we didn’t stay long enough for the unbeatable team to go down. Oh yeah, I tried the boxed wine too. It’s actual wine in a box and not bottles of wine in boxes.

But then again, we saw Lost in Translation right after we got home. I really like that movie. I saw it on my birthday last year and that was a very special day. It was cool to watch it with rydw i too since he just got back from Japan.

rydw i’s roommate’s cat is the best. I think I’ve more or less decided that I do want a cat. She was too sweet. She napped on my lap a few times and kept me warm.

I want to write about Sunday too, but I’m freaking tired. So, good night. Maybe next time.

Heartbroken

Posted in General at 12:58 am by D

I’ve felt this once before when a certain somebody rejected my change of mind. Which was fortunate because it probably wouldn’t have worked out anyway.

Last year, I did the heart breaking. Of course that broke my heart too.

Now I’m back on the receiving end. I don’t know whether it’s maturity or friendship or desperation. But I do see the reasoning behind it. I totally understand.

Everything’s going to be okay. Right now it’s just a little tough. No, it’s a lot tough, if that makes any sense. Somehow though, things have a way of working out in my life.

Long Distance Relationships?

Posted in General at 10:17 pm by D

I’m not gonna ask if they work, but rather, if they exist at all. I found out yesterday that my best friend and her boyfriend of 5 years (4 of 5 years long distance) broke up. By coincidence, my cousin called me that night as well and we got to talking about her long distance boyfriend and how she regrets backing out of her attempt to break up with him.

Is there really such a thing as a long distance “relationship”? The way I see it, two people are in a relationship when they’re together. Apart, well, they revert back to being friends, sometimes they become strangers, in other times even competitors - “I’m not going to be the first one to call him again”, blah, blah.

The moment you live your lives apart, that’s it. Unless you have a definite plan for your future, or you see each other often enough, that’s the end of your relationship. When you start sharing less and less in common in your lives, you grow more and more apart. Before you know it, you’re in a supposed “relationship” with a stranger. That’s what happened to me at least. I let that one stretch for 2 years.

It’s a pity. I’m amazed at how other people do it. Among the girls I know who’ve gone through enough long distance relationship time, there is a clear consensus on what this requires from both parties.

1. Communication - As I said, I do not believe in long distance relationships, but I do believe in long distance friendships. Keep each other updated on each other’s lives at least. Tell each other stories about your day. Keep yourselves informed AND interested. The moment you say uh-huh, uh-huh over and over without really listening is the moment you start rethinking everything.

2. Extra affirmation and expression of verbal affection - There has to be some compensation for the lack of the physical presence. Without the reaffirming touch, tender looks, or the sweet nothings you can’t just put a finger on, something’s bound to go awry if something else doesn’t take it’s place. Sooner or later, someone will turn up insecure and demanding, while the other will be cold and callous. Which one do you think you will be?

3. Honesty - When you want something, say it. When you’re questioning something, ask it out loud. Talk to each other. When it comes to relationships, don’t contemplate. Discuss.

I’m sorry for the people whose relationships don’t work out. People end up hurt and bitter regardless of whether they break up or stay together. So, be brave and be true. For everything else, the best of luck to you.

Back on track

Posted in General at 10:52 pm by D

Anybody notice how few and far apart my blog entries are? Geez. For some reason, I haven’t been able to make myself too productive outside work. Yes, I consider writing blog entries productive. I mean, sure I’m a good employee (I really am!), but I’m super bad at doing anything after work. Of course, Keene doesn’t really encourage extracurricular activities. Or maybe I’m just not motivated.

But before this becomes another tirade about my all too apparent laziness, let me tell you good stuff.

1. I saw Muse again in Boston!!!
Oh. Flow. Honestly, they are my most favorite band. They’re so amazing to see live. I went out with my friend R, who was such a sport. She’s never been at a rock concert and is a bit scared of crowds. So we ended up staying at the very back in this little teeny room, away from all the jumping and dancing and arm-waving. I tried to not let the nobody-dancing-around-me stop me from grooving but it was tough. I heard a few giggles behind my back, but who cares. I was rockin’ with Muse! Woo!

2. I met up with my friends from Boston
I stayed with R Friday night. Saturday my old roommies took me out to lunch at Rockbottom and before I left, I had coffee with E. Woo! Here’s to me keeping in touch with my friends. Yay!

3. I’m at the Radisson for C++ training
Check out my hotel. It has a queen bed, a living room, a dining table and a small kitchen! All for me. Tomorrow I’m swimming at the pool too. I was supposed to go to the fitness facility today to get some walking done, but, lazy-arse took over.

The training’s pretty good too. It’s great to be out of the office. I guess it’s not very good to feel that way having just started but that happened pretty quick. But anyway, I’m learning a lot and it’s a good review of what I already know too. I was pretty active in class too, actually. That’s probably a first for me. Good thing too, it turns out that our instructor is getting inspected by this really outspoken guy. Shortly after lunch, he told the instructor to take a break and took over the class! He’s much better in keeping the class’s attention, but he talks too much I think. At least he gives 5 minute breaks for what seems to be every hour.

4. What’s up with the dry snow?
On my way to Chelmsford, MA, it started snowing on NH101. It was coming down pretty hard and fast but the snow just dusted the road. It almost seemed as if the snow was just grazing the road and going every which way into nowhere. So finally, out of curiosity, I took my hand outside the window to feel the snow. After 5 seconds, my hand was freezing, but dry. Weird. I’ve never felt dry snow before.

5. That’s the last one.

Election and work

Posted in General at 11:31 pm by D

Man, I wish I could vote. I wish I registered to vote when I got my driver’s license. Of course I can’t so I didn’t. But hearing from the news today that the democrats have 3000 volunteer lawyers going around tomorrow to minimize intimidation from voter challengers or whatever they’re called. Apparently, the republicans have checkers at voting locations to challenge the validity of voters - checking against recorded signatures, etc., to make sure that no fraud takes place. In Ohio, however, challengers have been banned at the polls. And after hearing about all these lawyers, for some reason, the first thing I thought of was whether or not I could have pulled it off and put in my vote. I don’t really know why that’s how I thought. I think it’s freaky to think like that. I’m not one of those to think of challenging a known system to try and find holes. I guess I’m just full of surprises now, aren’t I?

That’s an awful way to get out of that. I didn’t know how to end that paragraph. I lost my train of thought. Full of surprises? Full of crap. Geez. Anyway, I hope nobody kicks me out of the US for thinking of putting in my vote. I didn’t do it! I’m innocent…. well, at least in this regard, I am.

Anyway, so I got my second assignment at work today. I have to get it done by Thursday. It’s pretty challenging, but I think it’s better than what I was working on earlier, which was hard, but which wasn’t really needed yet. I’ve been there a month now, so I think it’s about time I get some more assignments.

I’m gonna be a show-off now because the first time I got an assignment, nobody thought I could finish it. I finished it in 3 days. 2 days earlier than the deadline. So today, MM said, “She’s gonna do it so fast and show it to us tomorrow and she’s gonna think, ‘It’s so easy, why couldn’t MM do it’?” Then he said, “Try to stretch it this time, okay?”

Ha. I deserve an Oscar award. I actually pulled off being a programmer and I get paid for it too. Take that, geeks.
